What a Day for Everyone!
Everyone loves a good old fashioned race and it doesn't get any better than racing down a city street, zooming past cheering fans and crossing the finish line. Even on a cold damp day the kids loved it!
The Saint John Branch of Engineers and Geoscientists New Brunswick (APEGNB) presented the Saint John Soap Box Derby on Cranston Avenue, Saturday, May 27.
APEGNB believes in supporting community based events that help teachers and schools expand their Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) capabilities.
The young racers, comprised of children from the ages of 7 - 17 who, with the help of their pit crews, raced in two car divisions - stock and super-stock.
Proceeds from the Derby provide opportunities for PALS schools of Greater Saint John to enjoy the many offerings of Rockwood Park. These activities complement the science and physical education curriculum for our students. Providing our children an opportunity to experience outdoor activities at Rockwood Park will help contribute to a life-long healthy lifestyle and in turn, a healthy community.
These activities are at no cost to the student or school and even the cost of transportation is paid with funds raised from the Derby. During the 2017/2018 school year, over 1700 students from 21 schools will participate in PALS in the PARK.
The 2017 top three racers in each divisions are:
Stock
Colin Ingraham sponsored by APEGNB
Evan Cleveland sponsored by Boston Pizza
Andrew Moore sponsored by CBCL driving for Princess Elizabeth School
Super Stock
Carson Hoyt sponsored by Master Promotions
Emily May sponsored by NB Southern Railway driving for St. Rose School
Adrian Richard sponsored by Holiday Inn
Thank you to all racers, pit crews, parents, teachers and volunteers who supported the 2017 APEGNB Saint John Soap Box Derby!
